Madeira Botanical Garden

The cable car that takes you the long way around to the Madeira Botanic Gardens is under maintenance so we had a choice of a bus, an uber or walking up to the gardens in the end we picked a uber.
Its not that far, but quite a trek completely up hill so easy to get cab and think about return plan once up there.
The gardens were lovely despite it not being the best time to visit. I had hoped we might catch the end of the camelias but they were defo past their best. Still a lot of stunning plants - amazing giant cacti and succulents similar to the ones we saw in Malta.
Dr Fred thought the museum bit was a bit shabby- nice cabinets but the displayed objects had seen better days... he was right but I felt yhey had a kind of preloved air about them and really didnt mind the moulting faded feathers.
The large fish and turtles were rather 'alarming' in a sense they all looked very fierce and positivly manic. Still, I rather liked them.
Back in the 21° sunshine the gardens really were a breathe of fresh air - glorious foliage and scatterings of colour from the birds of paradise and late blooming camelias.  There were alot off other colourful plants as well.

We climbed to the top to the lovers cave... it was closed off- looked very dark and damp - I think it scuppered Dr Freds idea of proposing to me🤣🤣🤣. Then from the top wezigzaged down the gardens though the formal bits- winding in and out of the gigantic spikey cacti and prehistoric looking huge succulents.  I have many of them at home but in miniture form. 😂.
Once,at thesouthern end of the park wechecked out a walking route home... remarkably simple.. striaght down almost a striaght line.  It was striaght down and at times it felt like a vertical drop..... google said 30 mins - it took us nearer an hour doing fairy stepsmost of the way down.  There wasnt much traffic but what there was was local - going silly speed down extremly steep narrow roads!
We made it with acheing knees, feet - my thighs will know abot it tomorrow and once back in town centre we treated ourselves to coffee and delicious paxtel de nata - the national cake thimgy.

A last local beer in a street cafe before heading slowly back to our cabin...

Quick update on cabin the noise ... I was woken by loud banging at about 1.00am i wated about 20 minutes tp sed of it stopped... it didnt so I run customer services.   They said they'd look into it.   10 minutes later security  banged on our door, of course once they came in the room the noise kind of stopped🤣 I explained what had been happening .  He wasn't particularly sympathetic but  did say he would go look into it.  We think he must have done something because it went very quiet.  But now, I'm really woken up now by ringing people answering doors etc so I start readimg my book and eventually fall asleep and then the phone rings and it's customer services to say they've checked it out and they think it might be quieter!  We did sleep ok eventually!!!
Not the local beer but fascinating specimen jars in gardens museum ...

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Isle of Bute

Another Landmark Trust tick - this time Ascog House on the Isle of Bute - stunning as always... a very comfortable warm accommodation for the usual 8 suspects. This time we had a wee tower house for Dr Fred and myself - a lovely bedroom up the stairs with a big window and a bathroom al to ourselves - having said that all the other bedrooms in the big house were large and serviced by two bathrooms so there was no hardship for any visitors!   The grounds of the house were very extensive with ponds and secret passages - hidden paths and we even spotted a deer late afternoon - there were lots of old features - ornate staircases and a lovely hidden door which I did a quick sketch of. Bute provided quite a lot of entertainment as well - the weather was kind and we did a a muddy wander down the south of the Island taking in St Blanes Monastery and Kilcannon Bay.  The views were spectacular and it was fabulous to be out in the fresh (and it was fresh on the tops) air and we...

Entrepreneurial Aspirations

I had a bit of a family week last week - mainly as we anticipated the coming lockdown restrictions - It was half term so the girls kept themselves isolated as much as they could and then we spent a few days together celebrating little (not so little) legs 5th birthday and with an e number fantastic cake and lots of barbies.... and then a lovely walk round Beamish for some fresh air.    It was a welcome break in the tediousness of covid restrictions and also my daughter managed to sort out quite a lot of my technical issues include new mobile phone that works!!!!! We are now hunkered down for the next few weeks with time on out hands - I will be launching my Facebook page selling my scarves very soon - I' waited anxiously for them to arrive from the printers there was a rather avoidable and silly mistake about my address so they were much delayed... they travelled up and down the country lost in transit but eventually - much to my (and the printers relief) they arrived on my do...
