La Gomera is the second smallest of the canary Islands. Its quite unspoilt even in the port area. Like all the canary Islands is very rocky... volcanic rock but also lush and verdant.
We wandered through the town, found a map and headed up the (another) hill to walk to the lighthouse.
It wasn't a huge walk, probably 4 miles round trip but the majority of it was up through the town up the side of the cliffs. The road goes a long way winding back and forth with hairpin bends in tiny spaces. The pedestrian path uses steps and ramps to cut some of the corners off. Thrre were spectacular roof top views..- it was a definete work out and taking the wrong turn to the lighthouse meant a much longer route.🤣🤣 Fortunately we had covered the longest uphill stretch and even had had a beer to quench our thirst. The advantage of the wrong road was amazing views across the sea to Teneriffe and some more interesting vegetation both wild and domestic. The main road turned into side road.. the side road turned into a dirt road and finally a quite perilous dirt path and then suddenly the lighthouse loomed.
The lighthouse, when we go there wasn't massively exciting. Not open to the public and the promised coffee bar was completely nonevident... We were hot and dusty - our on deck temperature check before left had led to Dr Fred wearing too many clothes...
It was a much shorter route home - interesting range of houses. Mostly beautifully painted and well kept but also number of run down shabby places - although I'm a sucker for peeling painted doors...
In the town we stopped for a drink and had a wee wander down the main street. It was delightfully non touristy - obviously it had gift shops and fridge magnets but not overwhelmingly so.
Looked nice though.
After yesterdays hike down the vertical madeira road the walk back down all the steps and ramps had left my calves and knees not exactly screaming but most definetely moaning - we headed back to base.
On the way out we had spotted a large sundial so we had to go investgate. We were just in time before it was completely shaded.
It was set a nice square leading to couple of lumps of rock that had had steps built into them . I was knackered but Dr Fred had to go investigate... I sat and watched the sea...
Good day put and we ard inspired to maybe return one day.
