Arrecife Lanzerote 2026

After another broken nights sleep.. which I think was worse because we had somehow had a goodnights sleep the night before.. we docked very early and very loudly at the last port in the Canaries...Arrecife, Lanzerote.  Dr Fred and I came to Lanzerote some years ago - not to this bit, we did some wet and windy walking on a volcanic mound somewhere inland..

Arrecife is a pleasant enough town, full of blue and white buildings sprawling across a fairly - compared with previous isles) landscape.  There was a shuttle bus to the edge of town driving past some interesting, possibley old terracing and stone walling. This is how to keep the land fertile and damp, but there was no evidence of planting.  We continued past the Castel de Jose which house an art gallery thinking we might visit later.   A mile or so on the bus parked up and we walked into town through the main shopping area.  We were heading to the promenade on the other side of the headland. There were 2 more cruise ships in port so it was quite busy and to be honest it could have been pretty much any shopping street in any continental town.
Out by the sea was an old fort. Its a tiny thing set upon a small island now reachable by a walkway and by a drawbridge. It sits there with two cannons and was remarkabley busy so we didn't even try to get inside.  There were some rocks so I sat and watched endless tourists take the same photograph through the cannon while Dr Fred clambered around the lava rocks.
I could tell Dr Fred was 'bored' 🤣 too much town life... i.e. two days in a row 😂 so I suggested coffee and cake.
We had found the old bit of town and soon found a very spanish kind of coffee bar.. busy but we found a seat and orderrd 2 cafe con leches.. just as we ordered we realised we only had card payment and this bar only did cash so that was that and of course we ended up at one of the androgenous bars on the sea front....   Dr Fred actually said 'I am bored' - I don't think I've heard him say that before....
Time to go back to the powerpoint house.....
I think existing on about 6 hours broken sleep a night is leaving us broken people😂🤣. Its not even the lack of sleep cos'we could make that up during the day but the frusration of constant interuption... only 6 sleeps left.

I did buy two pieces of fabulous african fabric

I'm posting this  mistakes and all as possibly no internet for a few days

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Almost last chapter... In which our Go Stargazing team watch Astonishing Aurora Borealis seen from the deck of the Astonishing Borealis!!!

The weather brightened considerably and the snowy peaks lining our sail down the fjiords  looked glorious and sparkly in the sunshine against a (mainly) blue sky back drop.   More awesome scenary.... the Go Stargazing team wrapt up their lectures ... only searching for the illusive Northern Lights remained.  The tension from the night before dissolved in the sunshine the forecast for Aurora borealis was looking fairly positive - it was the captains farewell cocktsil party so everyone had their gladrags on.. We ate dinner and sky remained clear so we headed back to our room and donned as many layers as we could move in and proceeded to deck 10 in anticipation of stars and northern lights..... it did not dissappiont - just we got there as the bridge announced that the lights could be seen on the starboard side of the ship. It was stunning. Slowly the intensity built. The auroral green became brighter and bigger areas appe...

Isle of Bute

Another Landmark Trust tick - this time Ascog House on the Isle of Bute - stunning as always... a very comfortable warm accommodation for the usual 8 suspects. This time we had a wee tower house for Dr Fred and myself - a lovely bedroom up the stairs with a big window and a bathroom al to ourselves - having said that all the other bedrooms in the big house were large and serviced by two bathrooms so there was no hardship for any visitors!   The grounds of the house were very extensive with ponds and secret passages - hidden paths and we even spotted a deer late afternoon - there were lots of old features - ornate staircases and a lovely hidden door which I did a quick sketch of. Bute provided quite a lot of entertainment as well - the weather was kind and we did a a muddy wander down the south of the Island taking in St Blanes Monastery and Kilcannon Bay.  The views were spectacular and it was fabulous to be out in the fresh (and it was fresh on the tops) air and we...
