I'm wrapping up all the loose ends of my degree work now.  Sadly we are not able to have a end of year graduate show - instead the Northern School of Art are putting on an online show which will cover all the departments across college.   We have been invited to submit one entry and given fairly strict guidelines for presentation.    I should imagine its been very difficult for every student to decide which piece of work to showcase and for a lot of people harder still as there work is very tactile and relies on a 3 dimensional approach - those doing costume studies for example as well as a large number of my contemporaries.   I came up with 3 different possibilities based on what I thought would translate well in an exhibition and also which were my favourite designs  - its hard to get as much detail in as I would like as we were reminded some people will access this on a mobile phone and then any small writing for example will disappear  I ended up with 7 different collections al

And Now the End is Near...

I am minutes away from submitting my final module for my textiles degree.  I have been proof reading all day and correcting my appalling spelling etc.. and its ready to go!!! The relief to have finished is palpable, yet - I can't quite let it go!! It feels so final and what am I going to lie awake at night thinking about? What will I do to fill my lockdown days - Its a very bizarre feeling - I've never been a very good completer - I'm definitely a starter, explorer, doer but not a finisher, it feels so complete and final and I don't care for for finality - its unchangeable,  unalterable and fixed!!! not that I do change very well either, I just like a constant flow, a bit of spontaneity... but this chapter of my life is as good as over - and what a blast its been- these last two years have been such a learning curve and soooooo much fun.  So I have very mixed feelings - a sense of achievement, relief I've completed , and sadness that it is all over.  I will miss

Style over Substance

real scarf compilation I'm nearly there.... less than 2 weeks to my hand in of my final major project - my last module and the end of my degree studies.  I have spent all day refining my final boards - as we are having a digital hand in I want the imagery to look as good as I am able - sadly we are not submitting the actual finished scarves only photographs. Its really pushed me on yet another Photoshop learning curve and the devil is in the detail - never my strongest point but slowly it is coming together - I have proof read my sketchbook submission and corrected it accordingly - there was loads to do... and now I have been correcting the final collection. mock up scarf compilation I've prepped the boards on Photoshop and then put them into InDesign making a PDF and then proof reading that - meaning all corrections have to go through the process again.... I don't have a scarf printed up for every collection so I have had play with puppet warp on PS - it to

Digital Sketch Book Pages

I have slaved over a hot computer on and off for quite a long time now - slowly making my photographed sketch pages look tidy, interesting, fabulous and a true reflection of the work I have done in my Final Major Project to design a collection of scarves ready to hand in a couple of weeks.  Making my work look good as a digital file is a serious labour of 'love' and while I dreaded the doing it - it initially felt faffy and onerous - I have actually quite enjoyed it.  It has been a challenge to make my work which is very 3 dimensional and quite tactile - transfer to a 2 dimension digital archive.  I put lots of layers in my sketch book and nothing goes to waste - to be honest I stop short of rescuing other peoples discarded stuff from the bin but only because its some one elses so not a Ruby Starrs original. Every wee scrap I have - every little drawing, post it note - it all goes in - I like it to be busy and each little bit is part of my creative journey - so I have to ad
