Antigua and Barbuda....

Our last stop of the island hopping cruise, Antigua and Barbuda. To be honest more of the same. 8 islands in 8 days you start to get 'Island Leg' ... how ungrateful am I😂. Although it does look a lot flatter and therefore less lush. Also when you get into the town it's much more modern, less ramshackle and its very clean. I'm presuming this is because it's been hit by tsunamis, hurricanes or earthquakes in the more recent past, so theres been a lot of rebuilding. There is the usual run through of duty-free shops none of which were selling banana ketchup. In fact there were more 'upmarket' clothes shops then anything else.
We walked up through town to the cathedral, but we decided not to bother going in as it was probably just as grand outside. Actually it looked A bit desolate, uncared for and run down. We did think perhaps if we'd paid to go in the money would go towards doing it up but it looked like it needed a lot of doing up. Quite an interesting building though.
We wandered around the streets and had a beer in a local cafe. We had a nosey in a lot of fabric shops but the array of fantastic colourful batik and printed fabric on offer was just over whelming... and really, do I need more fabric?
We just headed back to the ship. We both agreed we might have done more trips if we'd have realised how similar and uninspiring most of the local ports we're going to be. But the end of the day this break has fulfilled its brief - 28 days away from the UK's cold and wet weather - Glorious sunshine on tap, Interesting places to visit, and lots of being looked after... and of course a lot of people entertained by Dr Fred... hes had quite a few requests for follow up information and the Go stargazing site should see an uptake in traffic and possibly binocular sales... sadly I think its like the rum punch - not quite so good once back on home territory... anyway we're not complaining.
This a popular port, there are 5 huge cruise ships currently berthed. We watched 3 of the five sail majestically over the horizon in the early evening. The P&O one was enormous... it slid out from behind another and just kept going and going and going... It had to turn before it could sail into the sunset and it was surprisingly elegant executing a perfect stately swivel mid harbour. There is something quite fascinating about these huge floating hotels that make our small but (almost) perfect ship look like b&b's🤣🤣. I know where I would rather be... (by the morning the 4th had left and a new 4 had berthed - all enormous apart from the 'Ambition' which might even been smaller than ours).

The evening entertainment was a local dance and drumming group from the island. I enjoyed the show - the dancers were good and very enthusiastic. It was carnival time lots of booty shaking and gloriously colourful costumes showcasing some good dancing. The drumming was great and no Bob Marley🤣🤣. Dr Fred wasn't as taken as me... I think its another addition to 'the things my partner has dragged me to' ..... but he did say it was better than the hula hooping native red indians!!!

  1. Ah, "the things my partner has dragged me to" :) It's great to read your thoughts about all these island stops. I've lost track of you on "marine traffic" (my old "ship-stalking" habit remains), but I'm guessing, and hoping, that you are behind the tail of the bad weather as you cross back over the Atlantic. Enjoy the rest of your trip (there's nothing to rush home for!). xC

Scotland part 2

The second half of the week continued in much the same vein.  We had one rainy afternoon which was actually quite nice to be holed up in the house with the rain lashing the windows.  It probably wasn't quite so nice for the two visitors that came on their bikes but they're tough cookies - and its only water- but I did feel sorry for them having to cycle six miles back down the track in the wind and rain, but given Scotland,  it wasn't as bad as it could be. The big quest for the 2nd half of the week was to find some deer antiers!  The chap that owned the house dropped in to visit - he was a very friendly fella and was chatting about how this was the time of year when all the Stags lost their antlers (he collected them and sold them) so after that we were on the serious lookout.   It's always been Fred's mission to find some dropped antlers....  The Monro baggers continued with the mission to bag the remaining three Monros... there is discussion as whet...

Vigo

We left the ship to explore Vigo. Its a much larger place then we expected... although tbh I hadn't given ut a lot of thought. Its a real mish mash of old and new and having got a map from tourist info we decided to follow the walking trail to the Monte Castro... the highest point of the town.  Most of the town was pretty much as everywhere else... lots of traffic... lots of people... one or two interesting buildings and a lot of shopping. We headed to the art gallery - this has been a year of gallery visits so we we seen o reason to change now.  The Museo de Marco is housed in the towns ex prison building and its very grand. In fact, I think that on this occaision the building might have been more interesting than the art....  Although the visiting exhibition by Susanne S D Themlitz was strangely compelling. It was a huge varied collection of eclectic items... found, salavaged, manipulated and arranged in lots of ways - weirdly inspiring - and mostly enjoyable to look at...

verdant lushness

Its a never ending island hop... today we hopped of the boat at Kingstown, on the island St. Vincents and Grenadine. Once through the usual port duty free - cheap booze and diamonds to go milarkey we were straight into the town... crazy noisy smelly chaos... refreshingly no tat shops for tourists, just local markets and street traders all vying for local sales.  Music blasting from everywhere, cars (very battered and often very pimped) all over the roads - parked in the middle of the street, loading, unloading, chatting seemingly oblivious to the total traffic jam caused behind them...  We walked through this mayhem - the temperatures were rising probably about 30 degrees - tourists evident by trying to walk on the shady side of the street - even when we turned off the main drag and there were less people it was still like carnival time with music blasting everywhere. Its very atmospheric and mostly promotes a good vibe although I have heard '3 little birds' everywhich way a...
