The West Block House.

Last Week we had our annual Landmark trust outing,  this time we stayed in the West Block House a mid 19th century fort on the Pembrokshire coast.

It was very fab, extremely comfortable - not at all fort like - well not in the living quarters but the battlements were rather splendid and the basements were rather spooky, all joined by a very old totally safe but rusty looking spiral staircase.

From the vantage view of the roof top we watched the huge oil tankers and ferry boats sailing and out of Milford Haven - guided by an array of tugs, they seemed so very close.

We had hoped for a big storm - having been warned that in extreme weather the fort is beset by waves hitting the eight foot deep walls and lashing against the windows but in fact we were blessed with amazing weather - some glorious sunshine which allowed us so good coastal walks.

We visited St Davids and had a wander around the Cathedral, it was very pleasant almost empty - an excellent opportunity for photographs of the interesting wonky pillars and strange sloping floors.  Much of the wood and stone work is incredibly ornate, very detailed and very well preserved.

Its the same groups of friends that meet every year and this year we decided the theme would by pirates - fort , coast, ships etc... however it was a poor show by all but two who made a sterling effort - I felt Dr Fred and myself could be forgiven as we were moving house, two other pals were having serious pet problems - but we were all very impressed with captain sparrow and his best mate...

As always there were jigsaws, good books, excellent tunes and dominoes.... wine and a massive amount of good food, it was very relaxing which was exactly what we needed after a hectic end of last year and house move this year!  We are already planning next years retreat...

Scotland part 2

The second half of the week continued in much the same vein.  We had one rainy afternoon which was actually quite nice to be holed up in the house with the rain lashing the windows.  It probably wasn't quite so nice for the two visitors that came on their bikes but they're tough cookies - and its only water- but I did feel sorry for them having to cycle six miles back down the track in the wind and rain, but given Scotland,  it wasn't as bad as it could be.

Funchal

So after three days at sea we finally hit Funchal in Madeira.  An escape from the ship, and I have to say it was very pleasant indeed.  First of all the weather is really splendid.  Especially when you know that everybody else in the UK is suffering grim storms and vile winds..  Over here it is between 22 and 25 degrees is really quite warm.    Funchal is a pretty city. It's built on a hill it with lots of lovely white houses with stunning red roofs.   In order to get the best of it we walked along the sea front until we got to the cable car and we took it up the hill.  It was a really good ride much longer than we imagined and it's quite weird because it goes right through the town -  completely over everybody's house...  So not only do you get a lovely vista of the bay but you can view the beautiful rooftops and get to look in everybody's gardens and to look at their picnic sets.. clean washing nice plants... scratty backyards.... We got off th
