Our new home

Moving house is quite exhausting, first we packed boxes and threw stuff in black bags,it all started quite tidy, boxes labeled bags sensible and then it became a bit of a free for all!!!  Now we are at the other end and unpacking is an interesting experience.

It has taken us this long to sort out internet so this is a delayed post... but we are now in a position to eat and cook in a fairly unpacked kitchen - to sleep in a reasonably unpacked bedroom - one where we can walk around the bed - have all our furniture and clothes in and still swing the odd cat if it should dare to venture that far...   We have made the sitting room comfortable but as this is the room we are going to decorate first we are keeping everything to a minimum until that is sorted.   It is however a nice room with a lovely big ornate fireplace and a cosy wood burner so it is still very pleasant to retire to when we are hiding form all the other boxes in the dining room, study , spare room and my new studio space!!!   ( and the hall and landing...)

We have sold the garage - nice chap came in the morning and it was gone by tea time dismantled and  loaded in a truck to go live with some American cars.  Now we have enough room to park Beryl and my car and the flock of  visitors we have had this week..  Its nice to have  garage but we know from experience it just gets full of  rubbish that some how we manage to accumulate so its not going to be a big loss.

It feels a little like we have moved into a mansion ha ha, we are just not used to having so much space but its very nice.... the decor needs attention, it has been very nicely kept and decorated but its not to our taste and part of my joy about having our own home at last is that freedom to do what we like to make our stamp on it.  (Dr Fred is worried).  its exciting especially now we have internet again and I can browse wallpapers and paint etc....

The garden is AMAZING - to be honest I'm a little frightened I have bitten off more than I can chew - but I bought Dr Fred a fancy hedge trimmer as a moving in present so thats one job I have managed to delegate.  I keep wandering around and finding new treasures every time I go out.  Although this garden is already beautiful - the previous owner was very passionate about it there is still masses of potential and loads of spots for den making and quiet hideaways.

We have been in just over a week and it feel very strange but really good, I love the power shower, I love the open space and I'm starting to make the kitchen space work for me.  I cant wait to get in the garden but the weather has not been very kind yet!!

Meanwhile we have had to finish sorting out the old house and making it good as to how it was when we moved in - back to beige and clean and tidy - this is finally done and we hand the keys back tomorrow so this new chapter in our lives will begin in earnest .....

Decorating will commence!!!  progress will be documented but first I need to catch up my uni work and give my final module a bit of attention....

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Autumnal Garden Days

I love these (rare) warm sunny late summer days and there is all sorts of lovely things  going on in my garden... I counted 12 red admiral butterflies whizzing around the over grown ivy which I had been about to hack down but then left until the flutterbies have finished with it... The late blooms add a dash of colour and the daisy strewn lawn is littered with autumnal leaves, debris from my brief half an hour of slash and burn and the stone wall is covered in glorious soft moss all shiny and tactile with a few late nasturtiums loitering. I've hacked out the brambles for this year, sadly I missed the fruit as we were away, ditto the strawberries, we never seem to get the fruit before the birds so I've made space and moved the plants that were getting swamped and so not performing to their potential - hopefully next year they will literally blossom now they have light and room to flourish.

wet weekends...

Another frolic in the damp wet cold depths of Teesdale with a enthusiastic group of foolhardy stargazers who love tunes.   Friday night was cold cold and got colder... Dr Fred and I were in the Beryl the yellow peril - known locally as the dirty tatty filthy (racist term) eyesore and we almost got toasty but it was down to sleeping almost fully clothed with a onesie on top and then my down gillet on top on that under a duvet and a couple of blankets... it rained and rained and the van was sat in a very large lake by 4.00 in the morning... too late to worry about sinking in the mud an we just had to brave it out.   The completely fearless in our party had intended to sleep in a tent!!!!! but in fact the tent fairly much dissolved in the rain and wind and they ended up in the bunk barn! But .... in spite of the weather we had a great weekend - a really good talk about exploring the solar system from Dr Fred - a new one for me so it was quite interesting  and the...
