Our 'Tower House'

Blimey moses its all happening at Coundon Tower... the redecorating is in full swing and Dr Fred is starting to feel the burn!!!!

I'm sure I've said this before but I suspect owning a house with me has come as a bit of a shock... well for Dr Fred even just owning a house....given the circumstances where he hadn't really reached the head space for a purchase - he hadn't actually had chance to think through the options and was still holding, rather blindly in my humble opinion... out for his own personal wish list. This included such fanciful attributes as a 'tower', an observatory and more practical ones like south facing with enough space.  It was a bit of shock when I presented him with the estate agent details of this property which had about as good as a 'tower' we were ever going to find in our price range, and a shed which could convert for star gazing... in addition to being south facing it ticked a lot of other boxes, central to the area we wanted, wood burner, shower, large garden with pond (my wish list) office space, outhouses, conservatory, central heating that worked, a bedroom you could, if so wished, swing a cat in, parking. and more  Whats not to like  - but to be perfectly honest it was the strange elongated porch 'tower' like structure that caught my eye and consequently made Dr Fred interested and on viewing the property I suspect it helped to clinch the deal.

And so we have our 'Tower House' - not exactly the granite Scottish fortress that Dr Fred envisaged - but probably a lot more homely and practical - easier to keep warm and a little more central than the wilderness - and now it is really starting to feel like our own space.  In our heads, its Coundon Tower - how pretentious can you get ha ha, and to be perfectly honest neither of us are sure why or what purpose the 'tower' serves apart from making an odd shaped almost pointless room - but we like it. Overall the house is evolving and becoming more like us - more colourful, eclectic and comfortable every day - we and our belongings are settling in and finding the right spaces and if I'm really honest I like being back in the real world with a shop on the doorstep and neighbours who wave and are friendly.  There's a regular bus service on the main street and lots of walking options right from the doorstep.  Lots of plus factors including 32 Buddha statues we have embraced with joy, to say nothing of the the other 100 or so garden ornaments which over the last year we have come to love in a strange way..  - but the anaglypta was a pain and just now I do feel that due to lockdown and the fact we can't yet travel and search out esoteric rocks to keep Dr Fred happy, the decorating is beginning to take its toll -  and he hasn't yet realised it doesn't ever end - once we put our own mark on every room we can start again with fresh ideas and new colours - different permutations and rearrangements - do I feel a divorce coming on 😂😂.  Incidentally we don't have a cat and even if did we wouldn't wish to swing it anywhere - I think it would be a messy enterprise with serious repercussions knowing how vindictive cats can be......

Scotland part 2

The second half of the week continued in much the same vein.  We had one rainy afternoon which was actually quite nice to be holed up in the house with the rain lashing the windows.  It probably wasn't quite so nice for the two visitors that came on their bikes but they're tough cookies - and its only water- but I did feel sorry for them having to cycle six miles back down the track in the wind and rain, but given Scotland,  it wasn't as bad as it could be.

Funchal

So after three days at sea we finally hit Funchal in Madeira.  An escape from the ship, and I have to say it was very pleasant indeed.  First of all the weather is really splendid.  Especially when you know that everybody else in the UK is suffering grim storms and vile winds..  Over here it is between 22 and 25 degrees is really quite warm.    Funchal is a pretty city. It's built on a hill it with lots of lovely white houses with stunning red roofs.   In order to get the best of it we walked along the sea front until we got to the cable car and we took it up the hill.  It was a really good ride much longer than we imagined and it's quite weird because it goes right through the town -  completely over everybody's house...  So not only do you get a lovely vista of the bay but you can view the beautiful rooftops and get to look in everybody's gardens and to look at their picnic sets.. clean washing nice plants... scratty backyards.... We got off th
