Coundon Tower kitchen refurb finally finished!!!!

Final kitchen update......

We continue to redecorate - this is the biggest benefit of lockdown - we certainly wouldn't have got so much of our house sorted if we had not have had this time at home plus the money we didn't spend on our planned South America trip. Instead we have a completely transformed living room, bedroom and now a finished kitchen - we finally had the new laminate floor laid last week and we are so pleased with how it ties everything together and makes the room so much warmer.  The floor and the work surfaces really work well together - and stay quite neutral so if we ever decide to change the colours they should fit in long term - (if Dr Fred reads this he will leave me - I don't think changing colour is option right now if ever!!!)

This is the kitchen now - when we came to look at the house I kind of lied to Dr Fred saying I could live with the kitchen - cream - if we could get rid of the floor to ceiling beige tiles - I would put up with everything else - we have been together for 15 years now so I reckon he should know by now I never do cream......

This is the Estate Agents photo so you can see how we started!!! We immediately painted the non tiled walls bright lime green to mark out territory and add some colour.  Over the next few weeks we considered what to do to make this huge space work for us.  We removed all the cabinet trims and painted the cabinets three different shades of blue using Frenchic Alfresco paint - which despite terrible reviews worked very well for us. It was really easy to apply and covered the cream - some of it has been on for 9 months now and it hasn't chipped or worn yet and I'm not kind or particularly careful at any level .... once the units were painted it became very apparent we had to have new worktops - which in turn led to a new floor!! In-between all this we removed the seriously nasty beige tiles - luckily the walls were good underneath and only needed sanding before Dr Fred did his first ever tiling (brilliantly) and then I lined out the rest of the walls and then papered using a very fabulous wallpaper by Emma Shipley called Lost Worlds.   The wallpapering was the hardest I have ever done - only one piece went up without needing to be cut and messed with but it was worth all the effort and we are very pleased with the final outcome.  New blinds and light fittings - some (very difficult to put up) shelves and our own art work all combine to make this space original and individual - our home - to be honest it feels quite grown up and tasteful - quite a lot of matching things and colours that go - not quite my usual maximalist style.. it will evolve - in fact I got a bit worried so I painted the undersides of all the cabinets shocking pink just to reassure myself.....

This house is really beginning to feel like our space and our home - its taken quite a lot of effort to remove the seemingly endless anaglypta - today we finished clearing the dining room so we only have the spare room left - the house is looking a bit bare with tatty stripped walls in the hall stairs and landing, Dr Freds Study and now the dining room but its a major achievement to see so much paper gone FOREVER  - next up purple and gold dining room??  Disco porch?

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Isle of Bute

Another Landmark Trust tick - this time Ascog House on the Isle of Bute - stunning as always... a very comfortable warm accommodation for the usual 8 suspects. This time we had a wee tower house for Dr Fred and myself - a lovely bedroom up the stairs with a big window and a bathroom al to ourselves - having said that all the other bedrooms in the big house were large and serviced by two bathrooms so there was no hardship for any visitors!   The grounds of the house were very extensive with ponds and secret passages - hidden paths and we even spotted a deer late afternoon - there were lots of old features - ornate staircases and a lovely hidden door which I did a quick sketch of. Bute provided quite a lot of entertainment as well - the weather was kind and we did a a muddy wander down the south of the Island taking in St Blanes Monastery and Kilcannon Bay.  The views were spectacular and it was fabulous to be out in the fresh (and it was fresh on the tops) air and we...

Kalamata and random stuff

We suddenly got busy catching up with old friends met on previous cruises - and making some new friends who were working this cruise. Dr Fred got organised arranging Stargazing sessions and future talks, while I'm embroidering a coat!  All this takes time and energy inbetween being available for food..... It was formal night in the 1920s style with the Captain's Cocktail party. So we donned our gladrags, smartened ourselves up and went meet the captain and have a to drink in the Neptune theatre before dinner. I have to say I'm quite impressed with the effort that people go to on these formal nights and some people have some amazing clothes And it was particularly good this night because of the 1920s theme They were an awful lot of headbands with feathers in them but they did look good and some of the frocks were just absolutely stunning.  They've refurbished the selfservice area. Its now known as the Thistle - and it's very pleasant - al...
