invaluable past travel lessons to be heeded.

I can't believe how quickly this holiday has come round.  It doesn't feel like very long since I got giddy because I had booked the return flights to Vancouver. .. I was going to cram quite a bit more doing things in between finishing college and going away but somehow what with sleeping, reading, dancing (why not/) and generally pottering time has marched by at rather a quick pace.  I have made do and mended my rucksack/pull along thing it looks extremely well traveled now - tastefully trimmed up nicely with super glue and gorilla tape.  At least no one will steal it - mind you if they do they will be deeply disappointed as this kind of  camping road trip calls for old 'past it' clothes that may not make it home, so apart from a couple of new cheap tee shirts it really hold the dregs of my wardrobe and of course our tent, home for the next few weeks - see previous blog for glorious Technicolor image....

On our last big trip - we took our gap year aged 55 and went round the world -  I realised that the art of packing light is a good skill to have -basically you pack all the clothes you think you need and then take most of it out to make room for all the camera, techno equipment you need, plus chargers wet wipes, and skin so soft bug spray- the IMPORTANT stuff!!!   - however the biggest lesson learnt was that three pairs of knickers (wear one wash one dry one) - is not enough!!!!  When you wear a pair of knickers every three days they soon drop to bits, depending on where you are travelling this may present problems fortunately mine lasted until we got to San Francisco where there is an abundance of knicker shops.  I wasn't so lucky with my kindle as that melted in the middle of the Australian outback, surprising lack of kindle shops, and I would gladly have swapped all my knickers to have it back!!!

9 weeks luggage and accessories (including tent!)

So that's my other lesson - keep the kindle cool -  I think we are unlikely to see the same kind of temperatures in North America but I will be careful as I was bereft at having no reading material for quite a while - Dr Fred was reading 'Differential Geometry' not my thing!!!

Also I need to remember although we will hire a car there is some carrying/ pulling of luggage to be had so 23 kilos may be the allowance but 12 is about carryable!!!

That trip, we were away for nine months, the lack of knickers and kindle were the two worst disasters..... well the erupting volcano and the run in with a bush fire was scary but more of an adventure then a disaster and the play tent we had wasn't waterproof at any level which didn't feel good the two nights it chucked it down and I think at the time it felt pretty disastrous but we survived - so hopefully in 9 weeks driving across the Rockies and back through the national parks of the USA we will meet few disasters and more adventures.

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Autumnal Garden Days

I love these (rare) warm sunny late summer days and there is all sorts of lovely things  going on in my garden... I counted 12 red admiral butterflies whizzing around the over grown ivy which I had been about to hack down but then left until the flutterbies have finished with it... The late blooms add a dash of colour and the daisy strewn lawn is littered with autumnal leaves, debris from my brief half an hour of slash and burn and the stone wall is covered in glorious soft moss all shiny and tactile with a few late nasturtiums loitering. I've hacked out the brambles for this year, sadly I missed the fruit as we were away, ditto the strawberries, we never seem to get the fruit before the birds so I've made space and moved the plants that were getting swamped and so not performing to their potential - hopefully next year they will literally blossom now they have light and room to flourish.

Goodbye Dissertation!!!

The dissertation is finished...  it took me ages to do all the detail stuff Harvard referencing ect... the simplest tasks were starting to drive me mad!! I cant believe how long it took me to work out how to number pages excluding the first two pages aagghhhh...  I suppose I should be grateful that its not like the olden days where you had to get it typed and bound before hand in - this essay has been a hard slog, a subject which I felt was interesting - how the digital explosion is ruining traditional creative methods turned into a fairly unexciting - pretty boring unexceptional topic!  there will never be a next time but my advice is think of something funky - does Danny Boyle like garden Gnomes - Racoon meets Lady Gaga - anything that might surprise you but not too grown up!! I have worked hard and will be rewarded with a mid grade because there is no passion in this essay - the hard slog is evident as is the lack of enthusiasm - C'est la vie you cant win them all....
