I have slaved over a hot computer on and off for quite a long time now - slowly making my photographed sketch pages look tidy, interesting, fabulous and a true reflection of the work I have done in my Final Major Project to design a collection of scarves ready to hand in a couple of weeks. Making my work look good as a digital file is a serious labour of 'love' and while I dreaded the doing it - it initially felt faffy and onerous - I have actually quite enjoyed it. It has been a challenge to make my work which is very 3 dimensional and quite tactile - transfer to a 2 dimension digital archive. I put lots of layers in my sketch book and nothing goes to waste - to be honest I stop short of rescuing other peoples discarded stuff from the bin but only because its some one elses so not a Ruby Starrs original.
Every wee scrap I have - every little drawing, post it note - it all goes in - I like it to be busy and each little bit is part of my creative journey - so I have to admit to being very disappointed that due to the virus we have to have a digital hand in. I was quite demotivated for a long time and I did some photographs but they were dreadful I couldn't get the light right so ended up having to rely a lot more on photoshop than I wanted to.
I build my sketch book as I go along not actually sticking it down permanently so I can change it or add to it etc.... its a load of work - but I find it very therapeutic in amidst the pressures of other college work and I have to say I enjoy the sketch book experience as much and sometimes even more than the final pieces.
I have completed 42 double page spreads - each one showcasing my work, my ideas and some of the things, photos, artists, scarves I have found inspiring. I've tried to keep the annotation to a minimum as mostly the image speak for themselves but that lack of feeling the fabric or lifting the layers is lost on a flat image.
But... this is how it has to be and in the scale of things happening in the world it's minor - it's also an opportunity to hone my PS skills even more and while it feels a bit manic at the moment the end is in sight... next week its my final boards and designs collation - and then we are nearly there!!!
