Image Generation Symposium

It started with a few interesting few days helping to hang an art exhibition at college.  It looks really good a fabulous eclectic selection of art, including two of my own, from textile students and staff.

Today was the exhibition opening with a private view being held after a symposium day event of speakers on the theme of  'Discovering Your Visual Language'.

This symposium introduced a range of extremely interesting speakers promoting a general debate about what is visual imagery and how it can be used and interpreted in so many different ways within design generation.

thats me in the corner...
.
We heard about how ideas generate from the most unlikely places, some physical and some less so - more contextual and some instances even dreams.... Locations, backgrounds, upbringings, make powerful images that can really influence design.  Imagery in its widest sense can reflect so many different facets like growing up, growing away, returning home and how ourselves grow and develop, image making can reflects childhood and memories and often acts as a social history document.

Then there are those who work in a much more tangible way drawing inspiration and ideas from shapes made with spaces and architecture, or ideas  drawn from books, peers, and even music.

Then we heard how those ideas and images can be applied in so many different ways, fashion , ceramics, papers, furnishing, film its an endless list really.  This is what I love about art - it has no boundaries and today was a reminder and a reinforcement of exactly that!!  Advice was offered about harnessing networks, gathering confidence, processes, the importance of social media, even how to turn your bedroom into a working studio while having serious conversations with potentially big buyers!!  - the speakers were all without exception, passionate, inspiring and very entertaining.

It was an excellent and informative day and I look forward to more of a similar elk...

Scotland part 2

The second half of the week continued in much the same vein.  We had one rainy afternoon which was actually quite nice to be holed up in the house with the rain lashing the windows.  It probably wasn't quite so nice for the two visitors that came on their bikes but they're tough cookies - and its only water- but I did feel sorry for them having to cycle six miles back down the track in the wind and rain, but given Scotland,  it wasn't as bad as it could be.

Funchal

So after three days at sea we finally hit Funchal in Madeira.  An escape from the ship, and I have to say it was very pleasant indeed.  First of all the weather is really splendid.  Especially when you know that everybody else in the UK is suffering grim storms and vile winds..  Over here it is between 22 and 25 degrees is really quite warm.    Funchal is a pretty city. It's built on a hill it with lots of lovely white houses with stunning red roofs.   In order to get the best of it we walked along the sea front until we got to the cable car and we took it up the hill.  It was a really good ride much longer than we imagined and it's quite weird because it goes right through the town -  completely over everybody's house...  So not only do you get a lovely vista of the bay but you can view the beautiful rooftops and get to look in everybody's gardens and to look at their picnic sets.. clean washing nice plants... scratty backyards.... We got off th
