We had a nice meal at the Steamboat Inn a recent discovery, it's busy early evening but gets quiet later and it's a nice spot with the added bonus of a place to overnight camp with loos and a very pretty car park, someone obviously takes pride in making it nice and welcoming. We set up camp and then had a walk along the coast as the moon rose, it was incredibly still and very beautiful.

We wandered up Bengairn hill just over the way from Kirkbean, well, Dr Fred went right to the top I went half way and then sat sketching in the sun, it was very relaxing, lots of birds and the gentle sound of a chap up the field mending a dry-stone wall.
perfect spot to sit sketching |
this was a long way away but with telephoto lens and there's a chap in sight... |
That night we camped at Solway View Camping, just for a night - the best camping in Galloway and in the morning headed to Wigtown for a quick bookshop fix before starting the intrepid journey further north to explore new territory...
Unfortunately when we got north of Stranraer the weather set in and it was quite chilly and miserable. Normally this wouldn't have put us off - especially in Galloway but having had such fine weather we have become softies and also we (rightly) suspected that the rest of the country were still having glorious sunshine and reasonable temperatures.
a reminder of dismal weather (with a ferry) |
Dr Fred went for an explore - to discover there was a coastal path we could potentially use but it was much overgrown and would be better later in the season when some of the plant life had diminished or maybe in the spring months before it got big again... it was raining and cold so we walked along the beach instead and have shelved that adventure and exploration for another rainy day ...
The rain looked set in so we decided to head back the Kirkcudbright and have a look at the new art gallery- £3 million plus refurb of the old Town Hall - We have seen some interesting stuff here in the past so we keen to see how it turned out.
It was posh, nicely done, but empty... well not quite, the downstairs permanent exhibition was open but a lot of it was stuff we had seen before, the two other galleries were both closed - one for no apparent reason as it was advertised as being open and the other was in the process of being set up. This was disappointing as the gallery had only opened the week before and it would seem sensible to have it opened with the galleries ready for viewing. The cafe was heaving and looked quite good but we felt we had come to look at art and not drink coffee and as there was very little art to see we left and went in to the town where we found a nice cafe and treated ourselves to lunch. The sun was already back out again albeit with rather dark looming thunder clouds as a backdrop.
It didn't last, the clouds won over and as the heavens opened we climbed back in to the van and set course for our own bed, a slow meander down home, but a lovely little trip out.
