Four days in the life.....

I had an extremely productive but in places frustrating couple of days at college last week - in fact I would go so far to say that in spite of a near Photoshop total meltdown over prepping my screen print (dealt with and survived!!) layers it was probably the most enjoyable couple of days I've had since I started back this term...

This is because it involved drawing, mixing paint, playing on the light box, getting hands on stuff done, heat pressing, getting painty, looking at colours, more glorious laser cutting and everyone in the studio seemed on good form - and that's even on a hand in day!  I eventually settled on a finished design to work on, a rather wild and busy complicated piece using three different layers of totally unrelated drawings from my summer sketch book.  Each drawing has been further embellished and tidied up and then combined together both by hand and on photoshop... the problems started when I had to scan the images in to make screen positives and they just wouldn't sit right!!! and they still don't  ....but I think it will add to the charm and the image is so busy and exciting I think it will work... the images had to ready by 4.00 so after two days prepping them I didn't have time to start again to make it perfect.

I also manage to transfer a photocopy print onto a piece of calico so I could start playing with embellishment techniques while waiting for the screen positives and very excitingly got my Adobe Illustrated prepped line drawing laser cut so next week I can play with embossing ideas!!! all good stuff!

rough start to design awaiting tidying and print prep..

Spending the end of the week at college is always exhausting, and I was ready for a large G&T and some nice down time at the weekend and we ended up having a lovely couple of days visiting old pals down in North Yorkshire.... We used to live near Yarm and have many friends in the area - it had been a long time since we caught up with them so we set aside the weekend, loaded up Beryl with essentials and did a mini tour intending to do some walking around old haunts while we were there.

As it happened we just ran out of time - again - we had such a nice time catching up with so many people being wined and dined, chocolate brownies, ale and steak pie in t'pub (to hell with diet for a couple of days - rude to refuse) an unexpected warm space for breakfast with more welcoming friends and lots of reindeer.. (not real but nonetheless a captivating selection) followed by a delicious sunday lunch with the friends Dr Fred used to live with when we first met and then the day topped off with toasted teacakes and more old friends.  We didn't quite make everyone we wanted to see, but it was really good to see those we did and we won't leave it quite so long next time.

Scotland part 2

The second half of the week continued in much the same vein.  We had one rainy afternoon which was actually quite nice to be holed up in the house with the rain lashing the windows.  It probably wasn't quite so nice for the two visitors that came on their bikes but they're tough cookies - and its only water- but I did feel sorry for them having to cycle six miles back down the track in the wind and rain, but given Scotland,  it wasn't as bad as it could be.

Funchal

So after three days at sea we finally hit Funchal in Madeira.  An escape from the ship, and I have to say it was very pleasant indeed.  First of all the weather is really splendid.  Especially when you know that everybody else in the UK is suffering grim storms and vile winds..  Over here it is between 22 and 25 degrees is really quite warm.    Funchal is a pretty city. It's built on a hill it with lots of lovely white houses with stunning red roofs.   In order to get the best of it we walked along the sea front until we got to the cable car and we took it up the hill.  It was a really good ride much longer than we imagined and it's quite weird because it goes right through the town -  completely over everybody's house...  So not only do you get a lovely vista of the bay but you can view the beautiful rooftops and get to look in everybody's gardens and to look at their picnic sets.. clean washing nice plants... scratty backyards.... We got off th
