Seize the Clay

Last week was positively hectic.... a trip to Lancaster where I managed to finally meet my son and his girlfriend, we haven't seen them for an age due to covid - a lovely wander and catch up and the weather was kind - then a fleeting trip to Coniston to meet up with some old pals not seen for far too long. I had (for me ) an adventurous walk up the valley which included off road rambling , quarry scrambling and breaking out of private premises......and as is becoming common in the Lakes I got hailed on again!!! It was nice to sleep in the van again though - its along time since we had such an outing...

We also had an exciting trip to Leeds where we spent an afternoon with my lovely daughter and her girls - hard to believe its been three years since we lost Jay - but it has - and we toasted his memory - then we went to see our very good friends who have finally, after massive hiccups have moved house!!! They found their dream home about a month before we found Coundon Tower and its taken them this long to sort out various legal housey stuff - but its sorted and we were honoured to spend the first evening with them in their new home drinking fizz and eating pizza and marvelling that this momentous occasion had finally come to pass...

Breakfast at Morrisons - what a novelty and then we collected approximately a 1000 books and assorted bric a brac (potentially rubbish) from our Leeds storage and hit home with an over loaded van and I spent the rest of the weekend shelving books and reminiscing over old junk....

In-between all this I made new curtains for the spare room and the dining room and best of all I started a pottery class!!!!

I have wanted to do pottery for ages but haven't either had the time or found a suitable class but somewhere on my social media Love Heart pottery popped up and when I contacted them they had a space!!! So last week I went and learned all about clay and made a mug!! Now I'm defo never going to be thrown down material but it was such good fun doing something completely new and something so squishy and tactile.  The mug was left to dry out and this week after I tidied it up - its still a wee bit wonky and its a bit of a mammoth vessel but its my first foray into ceramics and I love it.... after tidying the mug I made a basic coil pot which was amazingly messy and goodness knows what it will look like as a finished object - hopefully better than how I left it on the drying shelf 😂😂... neither objects have much finesse but then again neither do I  - but its a fab classes where I have been made very welcome as a newcomer and I look forward to giving Grayson a run for his money.......

Next I will sort the garden - the greenhouse is overflowing with plants that need permanent homes so I'm hoping for dryer weather - things don't look too hopeful with the virus situation at the moment - we continue to be safe and we will continue to be much more careful than we had hoped we needed to be - so glad we had those little but meaningful adventures last week but now its pots and garden time... what more could a girl want!!!

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Autumnal Garden Days

I love these (rare) warm sunny late summer days and there is all sorts of lovely things  going on in my garden... I counted 12 red admiral butterflies whizzing around the over grown ivy which I had been about to hack down but then left until the flutterbies have finished with it... The late blooms add a dash of colour and the daisy strewn lawn is littered with autumnal leaves, debris from my brief half an hour of slash and burn and the stone wall is covered in glorious soft moss all shiny and tactile with a few late nasturtiums loitering. I've hacked out the brambles for this year, sadly I missed the fruit as we were away, ditto the strawberries, we never seem to get the fruit before the birds so I've made space and moved the plants that were getting swamped and so not performing to their potential - hopefully next year they will literally blossom now they have light and room to flourish.

Goodbye Dissertation!!!

The dissertation is finished...  it took me ages to do all the detail stuff Harvard referencing ect... the simplest tasks were starting to drive me mad!! I cant believe how long it took me to work out how to number pages excluding the first two pages aagghhhh...  I suppose I should be grateful that its not like the olden days where you had to get it typed and bound before hand in - this essay has been a hard slog, a subject which I felt was interesting - how the digital explosion is ruining traditional creative methods turned into a fairly unexciting - pretty boring unexceptional topic!  there will never be a next time but my advice is think of something funky - does Danny Boyle like garden Gnomes - Racoon meets Lady Gaga - anything that might surprise you but not too grown up!! I have worked hard and will be rewarded with a mid grade because there is no passion in this essay - the hard slog is evident as is the lack of enthusiasm - C'est la vie you cant win them all....
