I'm really looking forward to getting back to uni this week. Its a bit daunting as its the final year and I feel I need to make the most of it as I'll never be able to afford to do my MA - no loans to over 60's so unless I get very lucky any income I generate from my studies over the next few years will contribute to keeping me alive and fed while I wait for my delayed (due to government changes) pension. ha ha ha....
So I have been working on my dissertation (finally) and have over 2/3'd written to a reasonable standard, I have been drawing all sorts and every thing over the summer so I have quite a collection of source drawing to work from - I'm looking forward to doing more. And I have finally decided on a concept - loosely based on Juxtaposition. I have always been interested in opposing ideas, clashing instincts and contrasts that high light each other - this concept is the base for the full years work so it needs to be big and workable - have plenty of scope and ideas that will translate into design at as many different levels. It needs to be malleable as the work evolves as really that's the excitement not quite knowing where you are going next.
This year is about honing skills discovered over the the last 2 or in my case 3 years (did 2nd year twice at 2 different establishments) - having decided on what suits me best and then translating that into something worthwhile and possibly money generating in the the long term!
I've written my learning agreement and done a mock up of a mood board... I've found quite a lot of inspiration over the summer and from past travels and I'm excited to put in all into practice.
I'm thinking to continue in the vein of scarf design - so I have incorporated that idea into the mood board. I have used ideas about Fire and Ice, the unusual siting of a cathedral in a mosque in Cordoba and I have used illustrations of the work of Dorota Podlaska. She is a Polish artist who has made a collection of sweets which represent delicacies across the world - in the west we prefer to east chocolates - in some countries insects are considered a treat she has combined the two in a clever juxtaposition of art. There are a lot of inspiring clever ideas of putting unusual things together in the name of art and design. I shall be looking at them all, and hopefully making my own!
As always I will be working with bright colours but like the idea of incorporating some clear lines and black and white geometrics - colours are taken from photographs I took of meadow flowers.
Exciting times - bring it on!!!
