Rocket launching in Teesdale

Time marches on and I don't know how another week sped by... it was another a completely mad one which included an almost total melt down in the car park as I thought I had lost my sketch book!!! If anyone has ever lost all the computer work or a portfolio or sketch book they will know exactly how I felt!!

BUT.. thankfully I eventually found it stashed away hidden under some evil bad hiding stuff!!! I started breathing again and with crisis averted, the rest of the week was spent sorting it out and getting ready for my first mid term tutorial which was great and made me feel like I am heading in the right direction... So despite a nasty sore throat and grim head all was well in the end.... and I finally feel I am getting used to this practically full time college lark.. we still have hardly any food in the house and clean clothes kind of emerge from time to time - but I'm starting to get a bit more organised (ha ha ) cant quite remember how the hoover works!!!

And then a well deserved little break from college work - and a trip into the wilds of Teesdale for the 'Lost Amongst the Stars' weekend.  This was an offshoot of the Lost in the Woods festival we went to in the summer and was a party all about star gazing, telescopes and starry skies , astronomy talks and lots of lazer lights, smoke machines and star tunes!!! (and rockets)
grasshopper captained rocket.
About 30 of us gathered together at a local camping/ bunk barn farm just outside Middleton in Teesdale - a real cross section of interesting fun people.  Friday night seemed to melt away - the skies never cleared so we had to entertain ourselves and while lots of gin, beer, wine was imbibed we still managed to listen to two fab talks about the expanding universe from Dr Fred - then partake of much dancing to great tunes from DJ's Horace Zontal and Yuri Cosmos.  It was a  late party night and no one was much bothered by the heavy rain and lack of stars - there was always tomorrow to hope for clear skies!!

On Saturday some peopled nursed slight over indulgent possibly drink related heads so we took it slow and had a fab water rocket designing, building and launching competition - Dr Fred and I defo had the best decorated rocket and we also launched the first grasshopper (plastic) into space - however - our rocket pretty as it was, was the least successful in flight - we obviously need to offer more training to the grasshopper - as a group we only managed to blow one rocket up and some one achieved 120 metres as the furthest launch!!!  this is a slow mo video of our rocket launching...

We had a wander along the river to Low Force Waterfalls, tea and cake, and then dinner in the pub... I have to say I couldn't fault the food but the customer service was probably the rudest I have come across for a long time - the bar staff at the Strathmore Arms, Holwick were incredibly inconvenienced by 20 of us arriving and wanting drinks and then about 12 meals and if we had known how hard they would take it we would have gone somewhere else!   They made a point of telling us that next time we should warn them but there won't be a next time!!  We had thought mid november early doors would present no problem and would in fact be a bit of a bonus to such an out of the way pub..... We were wrong - they didn't need our custom and they made that very clear!! It was the only thing that marred the weekend...

Low force
A spookily dark wander along the very unlit lane back to the ranch.  We had picked this weekend on purpose to coincide with new moon so we would have the best view of stars weather permitting, and lucky for us the skies cleared - the telescopes were out and the stars and the milky way were amazing.  We alternated between chilly sky watching a and warmer boogieing with a fab live set from a friend,  and later more tunes and  dancing albeit and little more chilled then the night before - an excellent weekend full of lovely people and good vibes!!!  It was fab relaxed weekend and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Scotland part 2

The second half of the week continued in much the same vein.  We had one rainy afternoon which was actually quite nice to be holed up in the house with the rain lashing the windows.  It probably wasn't quite so nice for the two visitors that came on their bikes but they're tough cookies - and its only water- but I did feel sorry for them having to cycle six miles back down the track in the wind and rain, but given Scotland,  it wasn't as bad as it could be. The big quest for the 2nd half of the week was to find some deer antiers!  The chap that owned the house dropped in to visit - he was a very friendly fella and was chatting about how this was the time of year when all the Stags lost their antlers (he collected them and sold them) so after that we were on the serious lookout.   It's always been Fred's mission to find some dropped antlers....  The Monro baggers continued with the mission to bag the remaining three Monros... there is discussion as whet...

Vigo

We left the ship to explore Vigo. Its a much larger place then we expected... although tbh I hadn't given ut a lot of thought. Its a real mish mash of old and new and having got a map from tourist info we decided to follow the walking trail to the Monte Castro... the highest point of the town.  Most of the town was pretty much as everywhere else... lots of traffic... lots of people... one or two interesting buildings and a lot of shopping. We headed to the art gallery - this has been a year of gallery visits so we we seen o reason to change now.  The Museo de Marco is housed in the towns ex prison building and its very grand. In fact, I think that on this occaision the building might have been more interesting than the art....  Although the visiting exhibition by Susanne S D Themlitz was strangely compelling. It was a huge varied collection of eclectic items... found, salavaged, manipulated and arranged in lots of ways - weirdly inspiring - and mostly enjoyable to look at...

Funchal

So after three days at sea we finally hit Funchal in Madeira.  An escape from the ship, and I have to say it was very pleasant indeed.  First of all the weather is really splendid.  Especially when you know that everybody else in the UK is suffering grim storms and vile winds..  Over here it is between 22 and 25 degrees is really quite warm.    Funchal is a pretty city. It's built on a hill it with lots of lovely white houses with stunning red roofs.   In order to get the best of it we walked along the sea front until we got to the cable car and we took it up the hill.  It was a really good ride much longer than we imagined and it's quite weird because it goes right through the town -  completely over everybody's house...  So not only do you get a lovely vista of the bay but you can view the beautiful rooftops and get to look in everybody's gardens and to look at their picnic sets.. clean washing nice plants... scratty b...
