I'm sooo excited... At last I've taken the plunge and treated myself to a new sewing machine. My 30 old trusty Janome is still quite functional but last time I had it serviced I was warned it was very 'fast' on its last legs and needed treating gently and with consideration. So that's what I've been doing and its clattering round the sewing room like a lawn mower sounding noisier and noisier every time I used it.
I've done a load of research and talked to various suppliers and thought hard about what I want and what I actually need and ended up spending less then I thought I would so I think I'm a happy bunny. I was tempted to buy something fancy and a bit over the top which did everything including Disney embroidery, I played with a fancy model at the knitting and stitch show which was fun but in the end I saw sense and decided definitely against Disney - very off putting but also I don't really like stylised machine embroidery - and only need to be able to free motion embroidery do tidy applique and sew and quilt and not really anything much fancier..... I've bought a digital affair marketed by AEG but I am reliably informed that this particular model is made by Janome so hopefully it will do me proud as it predecessor has. As it cost less then I had budgeted I treated myself to a long wanted overlocker. I've read the instruction booklets - which is a first for me - shows how scared I am of 'digital' (and the overlocker) and actually it looks reasonably easy- one step at a time and it will have it making me cups of tea in no time!!!
So now I have to get used to what in my book amounts to a new family member, I can look forward to spending the cold winter nights playing and getting used to it and creating beautiful stuff... the sewing machine should be quite easy to master as its almost familiar....However, in spite of reading and rereading and watching the DVD the overlocker had me foxed for a little while- I can now thread it with my eyes shut but eventually I spotted what I was doing wrong and now its rather splendid....joyous times!!!!!
However letting go of my old friend is hard and to keep it in the family I have promised it to my son but only on the condition he looks after it and takes good care - also I want the option of having it back if I want!!! I find letting go of things hard enough but I think hoarding sewing machines is pushing limits especially when it can go to a good home! (and I can always get it back ha ha).
