Random photos and random trip summary!!!

wildlife on Ice Fields Parkway
Its our last night of an amazing trip, we've been out and stuffed our faces and now are drinking all the left over beverages and doing the final packing..

lost baby - but wasn't there when we returned 8 weeks later!!

As always the last 9 weeks seem to have flown by, loads of adventures and more stories - some we have recounted on here but there's some that didn't make the final cut so lots more to share.  We got off to a bad start, plagued with various illnesses but in the end the good times and  highlights are too numerous to detail.

Elk in Banff
It was probably my best ever eclipse experience,  and I loved the wildlife especially the bears, elks and bison.  Yellowstone was fabulous but so was Craters of the Moon and City of Rocks. It was great to meet up with out friend from Australia and spend some time together drinking grey goose and sharing bad jokes!!!

Solar viewing buddies
I liked the off beat small towns we passed through, giving us a glimpse of a less touristy America and we took the opportunity to sample different experiences in various diners and bars - some good, some hilarious, and some downright terrible!!  The ghost towns were intriguing but more interesting were some of the places that really did seem to be ghost towns like Atomic City..... population of 37 but still had a bar and motel!!!

quilting bee detail at Eureka Quilt Fest..

We experienced massive kindness and friendliness from just about everyone we met which more then made up for the mardy cow on the camping and the rednecks who threw us off their land on Eclipse day.

camping facilities...

The camping was mostly very good, again varied but nearly every spot had its plus points but in the end while Dr Fred loved Toll Mountain because it had rocks and was totally empty (but for us) I loved South Beach because we were right next to the sea and we were able to whale watch for nearly two solid days.  We camped for 45 nights in total and they were some of the best nights on the trip - and while Dr Fred was ill some of the worst, I think its probably our last tent experience!! we certainly appreciate the comfort of Beryl the yellow peril!!!

sadly due to forest fires we we were low on campfires but did manage a few...

There's something about budget motels that fascinates me, its so like the movies and there were moments when I felt I was about to be in an episode of Fargo or Breaking Bad.  Most of the ones we stayed in were more then adequate although I will always wonder about the purple plastic under the bed....

we got lost and found ourselves next to a logging camp, the smell of cut wood was amazing...

The photos interspersed here are totally random - I've tried not to repeat any from previous posts - I just wanted to give a flavour or our extraordinary trip.

Vancouver on a sunny day

From the huge metropolis of Vancouver, across the awesome Canadian Rockies,

up and down the Ice Fields Parkway,  into the vast wilds across Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, and finally up the coast of Oregon and Washington back into alleged civilization of Vancouver.... We drove just over 5400 miles in the totally OTT Mercedes Benz with a pet mouse!!!

fish in the river Popo Agio
Tomorrow we fly home and maybe start planning the next adventure!!!

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Isle of Bute

Another Landmark Trust tick - this time Ascog House on the Isle of Bute - stunning as always... a very comfortable warm accommodation for the usual 8 suspects. This time we had a wee tower house for Dr Fred and myself - a lovely bedroom up the stairs with a big window and a bathroom al to ourselves - having said that all the other bedrooms in the big house were large and serviced by two bathrooms so there was no hardship for any visitors!   The grounds of the house were very extensive with ponds and secret passages - hidden paths and we even spotted a deer late afternoon - there were lots of old features - ornate staircases and a lovely hidden door which I did a quick sketch of. Bute provided quite a lot of entertainment as well - the weather was kind and we did a a muddy wander down the south of the Island taking in St Blanes Monastery and Kilcannon Bay.  The views were spectacular and it was fabulous to be out in the fresh (and it was fresh on the tops) air and we...

The Blue Dot

Excellent evening spent at the first Blue Dot festival held at Jodrell Bank.  Clever use of the radio telescope as back drop for the main stage... there were some major teething issues which hopefully will addressed if this event happens again - mainly access and parking.. it was a nightmare approach to the festival and fortunately as we were only doing one night we decided to ditch the car and chose to walk the last mile and half into the site... what a relief as if we had queued we would most certainly missed Public Service Broadcasting which was one of the reasons we were going.. anyway we caught them and then enjoyed fantastic set by Underworld - danced much of the night away in the rain - my trusty solfest poncho almost kept me dry.. it was a splendid evening and the telescope looked brilliant when lit up when it got dark. There was a rather fab "installation" called a luminarium, lack of site information - another hiccup meant we were really lucky to catch it just ...
