A (college) life less interesting for the moment.....

One of the nice things I did this week (I did many nice things with good friends visiting) was to visit Bamburgh Castle - wonderful place, beautiful sunny afternoon, magnificent views, interesting artifacts, lots of very beautiful vaulted ceilings and interesting stone work - some huge chains and generally just a pleasant day out..... more of that later...

but this post is about really about college work!!

I am being challenged once again with CAD at college.  This time its Adobe Illustrator - aggghhh although to be honest I'm finding it easier than I did photoshop... I guess that's because I did Photoshop and some of it has stuck so doing CAD isn't quite as alien as it seemed last year.

Still technology defeats me, give me a skein of wool and a pen any time, it's a bit like Ebooks nothing can replace the smell and feel of the real thing and I can't help wondering how much this technology contributes toward ''Fast Fashion'' which will eventually contribute massively to the death of our planet!!!

To master Adobe Illustrator we are having to 'trace' up some old line drawings, the plan being to use them to make a pattern to then have laser cut and be transformed into a greetings card.  I think the idea of laser cutting is extremely exciting, and can surely be used for something much more interesting then greetings cards... but I suppose one has to begin somewhere.

So mistakenly thinking we were only practising, I painstakingly watched and followed several youtube videos and finally managed to draw over an early shell line drawing  - there is no point illustrating it here it just looks very boring.. and once tidied up it has gone to the laser cutter to make samples... hopefully it will be an amazing transformation or I will be disappointed!

Unfortunately I didn't realise that this design would fashion my final print, no time to endeavour and trace another one especially if you don't have access to adobe illustrator at home as I don't (I'm not prepared to shell out a further chunk of money until I know I will use it).  So my rather tatty shell is going to be utilised and repeated and swirled and aligned and placed so to make an amazing pattern and ultimately an amazing card!!!  once again watch this space......

If I sound a little jaded it's because I think I am (a little bit).  My return to college has been difficult - not as fun as I had hoped.  It's a combination of  second year hard work expectations and getting back into a routine but mostly the fact that most of the current module work is computer based, essays about ethical consumerism - which is interesting but then the adobe illustrator challenges me as does designing branding mainly on photo shop... yesterday I spent the whole day at college tied to a computer and today its more of the same - to finish my essay - I want to make something!!!!!

My branding is coming on a little bit - I decided to make a tactile CV - I will put that together this weekend - I hope it works - its all folded paper and samples - the rest is flat 2d letterheads stickers and business cards - photos to follow when I decide on my final design.

Alesund

Our final destination stop was Alesund. This is a very pretty town in southern Norway built on a peninsula. All the houses are painted pretty colours and a lot of the architecture is all very Art Nouveau based. This is because the town itself was completely burnt to the ground In 1904 by a fire for which they never found the original cause. The whole town had to be rebuilt and this became a huge National Effort and a lot of prominent and up and coming architects flocked to the town to stick there 20 pence in. Consequently the town is very heavily Art Nouveau which was very fashionable at the time. There is this wonderful Museum just off the harbour which is a very beautiful Art Nouveau house. It has amazing panelling, doors, wallpaper, and it's all furnished with beautiful art Nouveau Furniture. It also house a collection of of enameled Art Nouveau Trinkets, boxes, spoons, jewellery, very very beautiful.   There is an interesting collection of old books and paintings a...

Isle of Bute

Another Landmark Trust tick - this time Ascog House on the Isle of Bute - stunning as always... a very comfortable warm accommodation for the usual 8 suspects. This time we had a wee tower house for Dr Fred and myself - a lovely bedroom up the stairs with a big window and a bathroom al to ourselves - having said that all the other bedrooms in the big house were large and serviced by two bathrooms so there was no hardship for any visitors!   The grounds of the house were very extensive with ponds and secret passages - hidden paths and we even spotted a deer late afternoon - there were lots of old features - ornate staircases and a lovely hidden door which I did a quick sketch of. Bute provided quite a lot of entertainment as well - the weather was kind and we did a a muddy wander down the south of the Island taking in St Blanes Monastery and Kilcannon Bay.  The views were spectacular and it was fabulous to be out in the fresh (and it was fresh on the tops) air and we...

The Blue Dot

Excellent evening spent at the first Blue Dot festival held at Jodrell Bank.  Clever use of the radio telescope as back drop for the main stage... there were some major teething issues which hopefully will addressed if this event happens again - mainly access and parking.. it was a nightmare approach to the festival and fortunately as we were only doing one night we decided to ditch the car and chose to walk the last mile and half into the site... what a relief as if we had queued we would most certainly missed Public Service Broadcasting which was one of the reasons we were going.. anyway we caught them and then enjoyed fantastic set by Underworld - danced much of the night away in the rain - my trusty solfest poncho almost kept me dry.. it was a splendid evening and the telescope looked brilliant when lit up when it got dark. There was a rather fab "installation" called a luminarium, lack of site information - another hiccup meant we were really lucky to catch it just ...
